A West End tenement with failing sandstone, open joints and lost stones at the cornice

Before

After

Dowanhill

4 Southpark Avenue at 2 Bower Street

The stonework in this West End tenement was in a highly precarious state, as nearby owners had discovered when their gable collapsed. The work included stone restoration and repairs to the full front and rear elevations, with masonry indenting and rebuilding as required. A large project, partly grant funded.

A blond sandstone townhouse blackened by lamp black and dulled by acid cleaning

Before

After

Glasgow

14 Park Circus

This prestigious townhouse, designed by Charles Wilson in 1857–58, suffered decades of abuse through lamp blacking and poor-quality acid cleaning. It took painstaking restoration to return it to its original blond sandstone. The contract also included mechanical buffing of the painted façade in the basement, and renewal of the weathered Victorian dentils on the wallhead.

After

Southside

Niddrie Road

A small works contract for Southside Housing Association, dealing with an eroded and water-damaged façade in the basement of a red sandstone tenement. After treatment with an anti-fungicide, coloured restoration mortar was used to reform the original detail of the stonework.

A late Victorian terrace concealed under layers of paint

Before

After

Hyndland

Rowallan Gardens

A beautiful home in a late Victorian terrace was concealed beneath layers of paint. Paint was removed from the façade and the stone mechanically buffed back to its original warmth. The stonework was repaired as required, the building repointed in lime mortar, and the mastic pointing renewed.

A red sandstone tenement with failing bay windows held by temporary timber bracing

Before

After

Parkhead

West Whitby Street at Springfield Road

As historic repairs in brick began to deteriorate, this four-storey red sandstone tenement was left in urgent need of help, with temporary bracing holding up the bay windows. Structural stabilisation made the failing bays safe, then reformed the finish in coloured lime mortar. For Parkhead Housing Association.
