Bringing new life to stone

It took millions of years to form the sandstones of Scotland’s built heritage — and less than a century to hide them. Our aim is to restore their original beauty and integrity.

About

Craftsmanship and care, at a competitive price.

Karl Schweps and Steven Carroll set up Fountainbridge in 1998 as a partnership between two former colleagues. Each brought complementary skills to the business: the idea was to create the kind of company we wanted to work for.

More than a quarter-century on, we have built a sound reputation with professional, commercial and domestic clients alike.

Low overheads and streamlined services keep budgets competitive and underwrite high standards.

Stone restoration has come a long way from the 1980s, when the noise and dust of sandblasting filled the air. The cosmetic effect was spectacular. So was the damage to stone surfaces and the surrounding environment.

Today, we treat stone with sensitivity, repairing damage and bringing back its innate beauty and strength, without creating problems for future generations.

Often we will be applying traditional materials that must conform to strict heritage guidelines. In other situations, we may introduce more modern materials and techniques that benefit from a century of innovation.

Our people

  • Surveying
  • Stone restorers
  • Stone masons
  • Trainees and operatives
  • Specialist trades

Working with stone requires practical training in restoration techniques, along with experience of dealing with natural materials that don’t always go by the book.

That’s why we invest in our people, providing them with security, safety, training, certification and opportunities to excel.

We comply with all current public and employer’s liability insurance and standards of good practice, including health and safety, risk assessment, hazardous materials training, PPE and face-mask testing, site induction, PAT testing, and asbestos awareness.
